Oscar hopeful “The Revenant” finally rose to the top of the domestic box office, with the gritty drama outpacing “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to finish the weekend at No. 1, according to final figures released Monday.
“The Revenant,” which is up for Oscars including best picture, best director and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, collected $16 million between Friday and Monday, according to box-office tracker Rentrak.
The film has earned $119.2 million domestically, Rentrak reported. According to 20th Century Fox, “The Revenant” has a global take of $223.6 million.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” continued to be a powerhouse at theaters, earning another $14.1 million over the weekend to give it a six-week take of $879.1 million.
The buddy comedy “Ride Along 2″ fell from first to third place, collecting $12.5 million.
A pair of debuts rounded out the top five, with Robert De Niro’s raunchy comedy “Dirty Grandpa” opening in fourth place with $11.1 million, and the horror film “The Boy” placing fifth with $10.8 million.
Completing the top 10 were “The 5th Wave” ($10.3 million); “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” ($9 million); “Daddy’s Home” ($4.9 million); “Norm Of the North” ($3.8 million); and “The Big Short” ($3.2 million).
