Nothing topples ‘Star Wars’ boffo box office; ‘The Revenant’ takes close second

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” continued to rule the North American box office over the weekend, but Golden Globe winner “The Revenant” was a close second as it moved into wide release, according to final figures released Monday.

“Star Wars” earned $42.4 million between Friday and Sunday to push its four-week gross to a staggering $812.7 million, according to Rentrak.

“The Revenant,” which won Golden Globe Awards Sunday for best drama, best director and best actor in a drama for Leonardo DiCaprio, collected $39.8 million over the weekend. The film had been in limited release to ensure it can compete for an Oscar, giving it a total three-week take so far of $41.4 million.

The Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy “Daddy’s Home” placed third with $15 million, followed by the horror film “The Forest” with $12.7 million and the Tina Fey-Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters” with $7.2 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “The Hateful Eight” ($6.4 million); “The Big Short” ($6.2 million); “Alvin And the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” ($5.7 million); “Joy” ($4.5 million); and “Concussion” ($3 million).
